Romeo Juliet & 12 Nights
The A.R.T. and OBERON are thrilled to welcome back Director Sean Graney and his chicago-based company, The Hypocrites. After a smash hit with his take on Pirates of Penzance
last season, Graney returns with his rousing adaptations, Romeo Juliet
and 12 Nights
, performed in repertory at OBERON for one week only!
For his adaptation of the classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, writer/director Sean Graney - the founding artistic director of The Hypocrites - turned not only to William Shakespeare's play but also to the libretto of the Italian opera I Capuleti e I Montecchi by Felice Romani. In this new version of the tale of a forbidden love between the children of warring families, the Hypocrites cast members were encouraged to become their own production designers to keep the experience intimate.
In this adaptation of multiple sources, including Barnabe Riche’s Apolonius and Silla
, William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
, and an anonymous Italian play Gl' Ingannati
, people fall in love, have fun and celebrate! Featuring a cast of only four actors that also serve as the production designers, The Hypocrites take over OBERON with energy and joy.
